Default Problems getting up... need advice

I just started wakeboarding today. I managed to get up about 20% of the times, The main problem I am having is when I have the rope laying over the board and the boat starts to move forward it pulls on my board and shoves it under the water. Does anyone have any idea what I can do about this. I managed to get up a few times but it seemed like I was getting draggen in the water forever before I could turn my board and get up. I dont have a pole or anything, I just have the normal hook on the back of my boat.. About 1 foot off the water. Is a pole something I should definately get, It seems like if the rop was pulling up, instead of down on my board this would make getting up a lot easier

hi ya

firstly i should point out that i have only been wakeboading for four weeks so i am not a pro but thought i would post a reply anyway...

i think i have been pretty lucky as i was able to stand pretty much straight away. couple of things you might like to consider though; firstly make sure the rope is the right length, secondly get the driver to start the power slowly at the begining and when it starts to pull you along let it power up and 'lift' you out of the water. people have a tendancy to immediately try and stand up and thus put weight on the board which causes it to dive. (not sure if that makes much sense now i have read it back).

i have a hook on the back of my boat too, rather than a pole/tower, and i am not sure there is much mileage in changing just to get you out of the water. it is more beneificial for those more advance people who require 'air'

as i said though i am only new so am willing to be corrected by any more exerienced riders

Default Gettin' dragged

Hey man,

I just bought my board the other day and I forgot how to ride it (I have been out before). All I know is the first time I tried to get up I had half of it sticking out of the water and when the boat took off I was pushing half the lake in front of me and I couldn't get up. Then I remembered that it is easier to start with your board completely under the water (like you are squatting on it). Keep your knees bent and lean back. As the boat goes faster your board should naturally rise to the surface. When you are comfortable you can stand up. I hope this helps!

Take it easy!
Robyn

I felt that I couldnīt get a good verbal description on how to get up but now that I know how I may be able to give you one (I do not have a ramp or pole on my boat for optimal lift!):
1) Lie in water with board transversely directed towards boat and line in middle.
2) Legs pulled up to your chest, straight arms.
3) Flex your ankles -> press feet (toes) towards the boat
4) Hold position when boat accelerates until you feel a little lift upwards or forwards.
5) You then want to get on top of the water -> stretch (!) your front leg forward and up (!) on the surface. This will rotate you and the board and bring you up, simultaneoulsy as you pull your arms towards you.
6) I guess it is individual but you may also stand up (raise yourself) from crouching position simultaneously under number 5), but I usually do not do until I feel that I am on the surface.
:P

i use a jet bike to tow , which means (on mine) that the rope is about 6 inches below the water, it is a little harder to get up than it is behind a boat with a tower, but as long as you follow Hugo68's instructions , you should be able to get up .
( i learnt to get up behind the jet bike before ever having a go behind a boat)
