the rule of thumb would be most boards come in three sizes small, medium and large. its ok if like me your a big heavy git then its easy, similarly if your small, but most people fall in the middle. on www.liquidforce.com they have the recommended height and weight for each board, or on www.wakeworld.com they have a board wizard.

If you find your self in between sizes then think what you want out of the board, if you go a bit smaller you wont be as stable but the board will be quicker on the edge and easier to manouvere in the air, but it will be unforgiving, however if you go a bit bigger you will be more stable, you get up easier, the ride will be more forgiving, but you have to lean harder on the edges to get the tracking you want and the board will be harder to move in the air. so its down to personal preference, try some before you make a decision, i know you can try at Thorpe but maybe Quayside would be good for you as your in Essex, but i've never been there so i cant comment.
