Hi Everyone - I'm a relative newcomer to wakeboarding - only got a board in early August this year. My board is a O'Brien Custom 142 with 2.25 Spur fins. I need help - The fins are deep - would it be better to have smaller shallower fins for me a beginner ? Ps. The destruction DVD is fantastic - good tips for beginners !!!! 8)

Judging by your name you ride on the river Erne in Ireland. If that's so then you will nearly always have pretty calm water no matter what the weather. In my experience(and i could be wrong!!) most people that ride rough water ride with fairly large fins, and most people that ride in calm water(myself included) tend to ride on smaller fins. If you want to start trying surface tricks like 180's you could try taking the fins off the board completely as this will make the board feel looser on the water(less face plants!! )
If you do ride on the Erne, then do you know Garvin Duffy and Jamie Mc Loughlin from the Erne wakeboard club? They ride around Enniskillin. Maybe you were up at their comp this summer(best weekends craic ever!! Absolute Mayhem!!)? |

I think it's easier to start with the fins. It will give you more control...feels like you are riding on snot without them if you don't know what you are doing. Sorry, bad analogy, but you get my point.
