Newish, advice please

Hey guys, only started out at the end of september, cant get enough of the sport.
I got a board couple of months ago, but it came with some funky fins on in, really deep ones, you reckon i need such deep fins with this board or can i change them for shallower ones?

Borrow some shallow fins and try it or just take the big ones off and ride finless. It's a lot looser but much easier to spin on the surface. Plus you get used to using the rails to turn rather than relying on the fins.

Not that i am an expert on the subject, but this is my take on fin size.

The larger the fin (hight from board) is related to the kind of water you board. the rougher the water the larger the fins you require. Smaller fins make the board a lot slippyer, therefore not too good for newbies as there is less tracktion and it is harder to control.

So i guess the question is, what kind of water do you board on, and what level are you?

If you are confident enough on the board for smaller (or even now fins) and you can handle it, then there is your answer, but fins make life a lot easier to learnt with as it helos you track through the water better. I can not see any reason why you can not have smaller fins on your board, but i am no expert, i guess it all comes down to your ability! =]

Hey...I board on a lake and still use my fins, even though I could go w/out them b/c the water is usually pretty nice. My adivce..use them when you are learning, on the ocean, or on choppy water. Try without, too...it's like riding on snot....Hope this helps.
