Just out of interest how do they score rides in uk comps?

basically your run as a whole is scored out of 3 categories
1.intensity-how big you go and how advanced your tricks are
2.composition-how varied your run is eg do you have a good mixture of inverts, spins, raley tricks etc
3.excecution-how clean your run is and how technically perfect are your tricks

sometimes rails are marked separately(their own category) and sometimes they are included in the other three categories just the same as the wake tricks.
there are three judges in the boat and their scores are averaged out to give one score.

So does that mean someone with not as many tricks can do just as well if they go big and stylish with the ones they do have...ie big stylish 180 with a grab just as good a sketchy 360

yes in theory. the problem is that there are a lot of things to influence your final score, you really can't talk about matching one trick against another in that way. if you do a big clean grabbed heel 180 then it would in theory be better than the other guys sketchy 3 that was all low with no grab but if he had already done a big clean 180 too and then does his sketchy 3 then that puts you behind again if you get what i mean. for somebody that rides rookie where the limit is one invert only then a typical run would be-
1st pass:
hs indy grab
ts tail grab
hs stalefish grab
ts indy grab
hs fs 180

2nd pass:
1/2 cab 180
hs fs 360
ts fs 180
hs back roll
ts fs 360

actually if you were in rookie division and you stuck that run you would def have just won ha ha.
that would probably be the best run a rookie rider could do if there was a one invert limit. you could substitute any invert for the back roll and bs 3's for the fs 3's but there aren't many rookie riders sticking that run without falling. the point is if you did that run big and clean you would get good execution and intensity points and the variety that you showed in your run would give you good composition points.
going big always gives you a good starting point with competitions because it makes the judges pay attention.

I spoke to Graham at the Europeans last year and he said you MUST try and get a spin in among the inverts. It just mixes it up a bit and gives your trick run a better composition. Ideally you would want a Raley based trick, inverts and one or two spins.
