Default Second car for towing a boat?

I'm currently driving an X5 (I know, I know, stop with the abuse) but yearn to get back to something a bit more interesting (and less abuse) so want to get a second 'car' for the half a dozen times a year when I tow my X-Star to somewhere that doesn't have constant 20 knot winds and a 9m tidal range. Budget is up to around £10k and, other than being able to tow that sort of weight, the main requirement is probably reliability.

Any recommendations/ advice gratefully received....

Thanks!

Double cab pickup truck... L200/Hi-Lux/Ford ranger would all be suited. You could probably get a 3-4 year old one in budget and just stick an extended warranty on it for hassle free towing.

That or just spend £1k and buy and old land rover....

Get a Discovery. £10k will buy you a Mk11 version with all the bells and whistles (ES Spec). If you can I would look for a V8 running on lpg. You cannot beat the sound they make and at 38p per ltr everyones a winner.
I have one for the exact same reasons as yours.

Must admit though I am looking to change for an Ford F150 or a Dodge Ram

For 6 times a year use I'd just rent a 4x4 for when you need it. No hassles, no depreciation, no tax, no insurance, no maintenance, no taking up a parking space etc.

Much better than getting a double cab and looking like a pikey!

Good point (especially the pikey part). Friend of mine has a Hilux for sale around £4k but I'd have to hide it somewhere. He left it my drive for a couple of months (lost the keys) and I did notice people pointing once or twice.

Hadn't thought about rental.... will look into that thanks!
