This is a pretty ambiguous questions.

It depends on a number of different items:

1) Personal Prefernce (being the biggest)
2) Boat you a riding
3) Weight you are packing in the boat
4) Size of your minerals

Look at it this way. Randall Harris rides at 83 ft and Shapiro rides 65.5ft.

See what I mean.

If you are riding behind a ski boat with a wake aprox 1 - 2 ft start around 60ft - 65ft.

Wow. You need a lot of information.

There are several wakeboard specific boats on the market. Gekko, Mastcraft, Correct Craft, Malibu, Tige, etc.

Your boat can be make to perform better with the addition of some ballast, or extra weight. Use water in bags for weight.

With the amount of information you need, I would recommend that you subscribe to Wakeboarding mag or Alliance mag so you can get a visual on the sport.

There are other websites to help you out.

In terms of your initial question, start at 60 feet of rope and experiment where the wake is best on your boat.

Like previously said the answers will vary. I ride at 70' behind my boat and 80' behind my buddys. I ride better the farther out I am.

Just ride were YOU feel comfortable. If you are haveing a hard time clearing the wake, shorten the rope. When you have confidence clearing the wake, ride a little futher out.

For a better wake, look into getting some fat sacs. You can get a pair of buddy sacs that are 250lbs each and stick them on each side of the engine comparment. If you want to add dead weight, get some lead bars.
Here is what I did. I have 300lbs of lead, took out my back seat and put a 500lb sac. I put a buddy sac(250lbs) in the front.
