I thought I'd let you know that I've just had official confirmation that I set a new world record for endurance wakeboarding.
On 1st Sep 2004 I completed 200 continuous laps of the cable at WakeMK to raise money for Sight Savers International (
www.sightsavers.org). This equates to 172 Km or 106.9 miles, completed in a grueling 6hrs 17mins. There was a strict set of rules for the event which included no sitting on the handle, normal wakeboard and bindings must be used and the event must be continuous.
The main aim of doing this was to raise money for Sight Savers. I raised £1,300 which would provide cataract operations for about 75 people. Basically 75 people would be able to see again because I spent a day wakeboarding round and round in circles! What a life changing reason to succeed.
I approached Guinness to see if there was an existing record and there wasn't so, with the help of the staff at WakeMK, I wrote the rules for the event, made a video and put together a report detailing what I had done. Guinness put this through rigorous research and have just confirmed it as an official World Record.
Other people may have done a similar thing before - I don't know - but this sets an official benchmark to aim at. I'm sure it'll be broken in the future but I know I wont be doing it again - it was the hardest thing I've ever done! I trained all summer but had only done 120 non-stop laps in training. Needless to say I colapsed when I finally got off the water!
I haven't mentioned this before as I wanted official recognition and hopefully this will now inspire others. I know wakeboarding is mainly about tricks but how about setting a world record now there's one to aim at. Hopefully I'll get a bit of publicity for Sight Savers and wakeboarding as a sport. Maybe then we wont have to explain what wakeboarding is to quite so many people!
