Damn right, there's never been a better time to buy especially with the curent exchange rate! If you take any of your own time into account it will definately be cheaper to buy one.

Good skills though guys you'll get a better feeling being pulled by something you assembled yourself than one you bought, money can't buy that.

I doubt it, the total cost was about £700. Where can I buy one out of the box for close to that?

I'm only in to mine for about $560 thats with a brake + $275 for the rope. Granted I had all the steel sitting in my shop so that cut the price $100 if that. The cheapest winch I've found is around $1650 and thats without a brake and no rope. As I see it I am up $1090. So in my opinion if you do it right your saving a load of money.

And like dogpoo said you'll never get a better feeling then being pulled by somthing you built yourself.

your kinda missin my point,,im all for self build ,but as pretty much all parts on a winch are the same apart from frames it seems a little self input as to its design would give much more self satisfaction than just copyin what someone else went to the trouble of doing,,

If it aint broke dont fix it. Plus theres only so much you can do to change it up. I'm not sure if the winch they copied was your winch or not. If it was you should take it as a compliment. Copying is the highest form of flatery. Its a good easy design. There are things people can do different, but like stack said when your just starting out you wanna make sure to get things done right.
